Common Questions About Flooring
Answers to the questions we are asked most often by homeowners. If your question is not here, call in or get in touch and we will happily help.
Start with how the room is used. Busy areas like hallways, kitchens and stairs need something hard wearing and easy to clean, while bedrooms and lounges are where comfort and warmth matter most. Moisture is the other factor: kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms suit water resistant floors such as LVT. Bring your room sizes and a few photos to our showroom and we will help you match the right floor to each space and your budget.
Both give you a wood or stone look at a lower cost than the real thing, but they are built differently. Laminate has a printed image over a compressed wood based core, which makes it affordable and tough but more sensitive to standing water. LVT is a vinyl product that is warmer and quieter underfoot and usually water resistant, which is why it suits kitchens and bathrooms. LVT tends to cost a little more, and we are happy to show you both side by side.
Yes. LVT is water resistant, which makes it one of the best choices for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and hallways. It copes with spills, splashes and damp footwear, wipes clean easily and stays comfortable underfoot. For wet areas we make sure the subfloor is properly prepared and the joints are fitted correctly so moisture cannot get underneath.
For family homes we usually recommend LVT or a good quality laminate in the busiest rooms, as both resist scratches, spills and heavy use and are quick to wipe clean. Where you want softness and warmth, such as bedrooms and lounges, a hard wearing twist pile carpet works well and hides everyday marks. We will talk through your household and point you towards ranges that are built to last.
Yes, we can lift and take away your old flooring as part of the job. Let us know when we measure up so we can include it in your quote. If you would prefer to remove it yourself to keep the cost down, that is fine too.
It helps if smaller items and breakables are cleared, but you do not need to move everything. We can shift larger furniture as part of the fitting where needed. We will let you know exactly what to expect before the day so there are no surprises.
Most domestic rooms are fitted within a day, and many jobs are completed in a single visit. Larger projects, whole houses or floors that need extra subfloor preparation may take longer. When we quote, we will give you a clear idea of timing so you can plan around it.
Sometimes, depending on the condition and type of the existing floor. In many cases the best and longest lasting result comes from lifting the old floor and preparing the subfloor properly first. We will check what you have and give you an honest view on whether fitting over it is sensible or whether it is worth doing the groundwork.
The right underlay depends on the flooring you choose and the room. Carpet and laminate both perform better with a suitable underlay, which adds comfort, warmth and sound insulation and helps the floor last. We include the correct underlay in your quote and explain the options, including choices that work with underfloor heating.
It is easy. LVT and laminate need no more than regular sweeping or vacuuming and an occasional damp mop, keeping excess water off laminate. Carpets stay looking their best with regular vacuuming and prompt attention to spills. We give you simple care advice for your specific floor when we finish, so you know exactly how to keep it in good condition.
The flooring itself comes with the manufacturer’s warranty, which varies by product and range, and we will tell you what applies to your chosen floor. We also stand behind our fitting. If anything is not right with the installation, contact us and we will put it right. [Specific warranty and workmanship guarantee terms to be confirmed.]
